Term= coined by blumer; 3 premises to his theory: (1) everything in world (objects, other ppl, places, etc)= carry meaning for ppl. The way we act towards these things= depends on these meanings. : meaning= almost never neutral/objective; depends on context & is contingent. (3) meanings= handled & modified by interpretative processes that person relies on. Therefore meanings= depend both on the individual & the collective.
