Document Summary

Queer- is a interdisciplinary perspective that seeks to disrupt socially constructed systems of meaning surrounding human sexuality. Sexuality-is an enduring emotional, romantic, or sexual attraction toward others based upon their gender or sex. Heteronormativity- the system of inequity derived from the heterosexual/ homosexual binary, -refers to a diverse set of social practices that function (1) to perpetuate the heterosexual/homosexual binary and (2) to privilege heterosexuality. The closet- social roles or powers of men & women, we can easily point to individuals that fill the categories of men and women. However, when we think of an individuals sexuality as largely a psychic or internal component, and many actions that we would attribute to this component tend to occur behind closed doors. Binaries- must exist if heteronormativity is to be considered normal or desirable, the second function of heteronormative social practices. Sexual othering- the process of stigmatizing homosexuality (or really any non-heterosexual practice) in order to privilege heterosexuality.
