Power capacity to influence others who are in an independent state. Legitimate power comes from person"s position in the organization (authority) Reward power from ability to provide +ve outcomes and prevent ve outcomes. Coercive power power from use of punishment and threat. Referent power from being well liked by others (stems from identification with the power holder and anyone can be well liked) Expert power from having special information/expertise valued by the organization. How do people get power: doing things right o, extraordinary activities. Unusual/non-routine activities: visible activities, relevant activities, cultivating the right people (good relationship with) o, outsiders, subordinates, peers, superiors. Empowerment giving people the authority, opportunity and motivation to take initiative and solve organizational problems. Influence tactics tactics used to convert power into actual influence over others: assertiveness. Ingratiation using flattery and acting friendly/polite: rationality logic, reason, planning, exchange trading favours, upward appeal, coalition formation seek united support from other organizational members.
