People minimize their symptoms = tricking themselves and others that they are healthier than they actually are, have skepticism about the safety & of diff. treatments, etc. 99% of respondents in a survey said they would seek mental health treatment if they believed it would be helpful. Chapter 16 notes: therapies: drug treatments made more available by using generic products instead of brand name ones. Impatient treatment and deinstitutionalization: especially during 1800s and 1900s, people w/ severe disorders (ie. schizophrenia or alzheimer"s disease) were often separated from society and locked away in an asylum.
