Anxiety disorders: category of disorders involving fear or nervousness that is excessive, irrational and maladaptive (most common experience is fight-or-flight response) Generalized anxiety disorder (gad): frequently elevated levels of anxiety, generally from the normal challenges and stress of everyday life. The person with gad fears disaster lurking around every corner, and may experience symptoms ranging from difficulty sleeping or breathing to difficulty concentrating because of intrusive thoughts. Phobia: severe irrational fear of an object or situation: specific phobia: fear of a specific object, activity or organism, social phobias: fear of interpersonal situations and relationships. Social phobias: strong fear of being judged by others or being embarrassed or humiliated in public. Anxiety disorders tend to be self-perpetuating with anxiety leading to circumstances that provoke further anxiety. Tend to reinforce themselves over time :self- fulfilling prophecy. Exposure: repeatedly and in stages exposed to the object of fear so that they can work past emotional reactions.
