Idiographic approach focuses on creating detailed descriptions of a specific person"s unique personality characteristics. Helpful for understanding yourself and the social world and human experiences. Nomothetic approach examine personality in large groups of people with the aim of making generalizations about personality structure. Want to understand factors that predict certain behaviours across people in general. A personality trait describes a person"s habitual patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving. Allport was the first person to make a systematic attempt to identify all possible traits. The barnum effect is one someone believes that a personality profile fits them even when it doesnt. Factor analysis is used to group items that people respond to similarly. Five factor model a trait based theory of personality based on the finding that personality can be described using five major dimensions.
