Module 13. 1 the power of situation: social influences on behaviour. Social psychologists study the interaction between the person and the situation. Behaviour is a function of the person and the environment. Mimicry, taking on for ourselves the behaviours, emotional displays and facial expressions of others. Who we are is constantly shaped and patterned by other people. Chameleon effecthow people mimic others, non-consciously, automatically copying other"s behaviours even without realizing it. Social norms are the unwritten guidelines for how to behave in social contexts. Social loafing occurs when an individual puts less effort into working on a task with others. People loaf because they believe others in the group are also not doing their best. Low efficacy beliefs this occurs if tasks are too difficult or complex so people dont know where to start. Overcome bystructuring tasks so its straight forward.
