Chapter 12. 3 : psychodynamic and humanistic approaches to personality. Children need to release their libidinal energy appropriately through the part of the body to help them move onto the next stage. Of all goes well, the infant develops a basic sense of security and empowerment; foundation of the ego. Children who fail to transition from this stage experience fixation will develop and emotional attachment to using its mouth, developing oral fixation. Infant may become dependent, have a addictive personality, seek to consume for emotional needs. Person never fully develops ego, is more vulnerable to anxiety, and less capable at adjusting to social reality: anal (2-3 years): bowel elimination and control. Toddlers begin to become aware of themselves as separate individuals. If kids can get toilet trained successfully, they accomplish a sense of competence and confidence that can develop them into a productive adult.
