Motivation a general term for a group of phenomena that affect nature, strength or persistence of individual"s behaviour. Stimuli that have become associated with pleasant or unpleasant events motivate approach or avoidance behaviour. Being deprived of particular reinforcer increases an organism"s preference for particular behaviour. Many approaches to motivation: physiological, behavioural, cognitive, and social. Physiological and behavioural external stimuli and internal change that affects person"s behaviour. Three important categories: eating, sexual behaviour, and agression. Particularly important to survival of individual and species. Impossible to seperate motivation from reinforcement and punishment. Regulatory behaviour behaviour that tends to bring physiological conditions back to normal and thus restoring homeostasis. Eg. eating, drinking, hunting, shivering, building fire, putting on warm coat. Situations that motivate us also provoke certain emotions.
