Document Summary
Developmental psychology is the study of human physical, cognitive, social and behavioural characteristics across the lifespan. Cross-sectional design is used to measure and compare samples of people at different ages at a given point in time. They are relatively cheap and easy to administer and they allow a study to be done quickly, but they can suffer from cohort effects. Cohort effects are differences between people that result from being born in different time periods. Longitudinal design follow the development of the same set of individuals through time. With this type of study, you would select a sample of infants and measure their cognitive development periodically over the course of 20 years. Demands of following a single group of people for a long period of time can be very costly and time consuming, and often suffer from the problem of attrition. Attrition occurs when participants drop out of a study for some reason, such as losing interest or moving away.
