Document Summary
Developmental psychology: the study of human physical, cognitive, social, and behavioural characteristics across the lifespan. Cross-sectional design: used to measure and compare samples of people at different ages at a given point in time. Cross-sectional designs are relatively cheap and easy to administer, they allow a study to be done quickly. Longitudinal design: follows the development of the same set of individuals through time. Attrition occurs when participants drop out of a study for some reason, such as loosing interest or moving away. Study selects a sample of infants and measure their cognitive development periodically over the course of 20 years. Cohort effects: differences between people that result from being born in different time periods. The transition from stage to stage involves rapid shifts in thinking and behaving, and fundamental shifts in the types of abilities a child can perform. Complex interactions between genetics and the environment are constantly shaping developmental processes.
