Document Summary
As science advanced, explanations for mental illness shifted from demon possessions to physical illness believing that the person was suffering from a mental illness. Philippe pinel and dorothea dix - changed the old approach to treating the mentally ill which was to scare them and drain their blood. Found a new approach called moral treatment - leading to patients being treated with kindness and decency: able to roam the hospital halls and other similar things, however, no cures still. By the 1950"s, chlorpromazine was introduced and people with schizophrenia and other disorders were able to function normal under medication. This was no permanent cure, must"ve been taken daily. One of the major problems of the biopsychosocial model is how to reliably identify who has a mental disorder in the first place. To determine if someone has a disorder, you must figure if they are normal or abnormal , which behaviour wise varies from culture to culture.
