Document Summary
13. 1 the power of the situation: social influences on behaviour. Lewin argued that a person"s behaviour was the consequence of sets of forces operating on the person. Mimicry: once the forces were understood, the behaviour could be predicted. Chameleon effect: people mimic others non-consciously, automatically coping others" behaviours even without realizing it. Social norms: the (usually unwritten) guidelines for how to behave in social contexts. Social loafing: occurs when an individual puts less effort into working on a task with others: results in poorer outcomes when working in groups. Factors that encourage loafing include: low efficacy beliefs: occurs if tasks are too difficult or complex. Can be overcome by giving people a larger understanding of how different group members rely on and affect each other: not caring about the group"s outcome: occurs when a person is not personally identified with the group. Can be overcome by providing feedback about progress of members.
