PSYB04H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Naturalistic Observation, Belmont Report, Undue Influence
Document Summary
Chapter 4 - ethical guidelines for psychology research. The tuskegee syphilis study illustrates three major ethics violations. In 1920 + 30s > ppl concerned that poor black men in southern us were infected w/ syphilis. Back in day was untreatable > available treatments involved infusions of toxic metals > when worked had serious side effects. Us public health service w/ the tuskegee (alabama) institute began study of 600 black men. Wanted to study effects of untreated syphilis on men"s health over long term. Researchers followed infected men until each 1 died to obtain data on how disease progresses when untreated. Men in study were harmed: not told about cure, subjected to painful + dangerous tests. Researchers targeted a disadvantaged social group: all men in study were poor + african american. The milgram obedience studies illustrate an ethical balance. 65% of participants followed experimenter"s demands + delivered 450 v shock to learner.
