PSYB10H3 Chapter 4: Ch.4, 4/e, Social Psychology
Document Summary
How people think about the social world and arrive at judgments. Information available: snap judgment- judge based on brief glances; predict rather well, pronounced jaw = dominant, baby faces. Misleading info: firsthand info is better, pluralistic ignorance- misperception when people act in ways that con ict with their private beliefs because of a concern for the social consequences. Tv: diminished in those living in low crime areas. Order effects: primacy effect- information presented rst has the most in uence, recency effect- information presented las has the most in uence, when last items come more readily to mind. Framing effect- way information is presented can frame the way it is processed and understood: spin framing- varies the content, not just the order, of what is presented, focus is different. Information framed in negative terms seems to elicit a stronger response. Motivated con rmation bias: top down processing. Bottom up processing- taking in relevant stimuli from the outside world.
