The social psychology study of self begins with william james. Psychology (1890), james introduced many concepts about the self. James coined the term the (cid:858)so(cid:272)ial (cid:373)e(cid:859) to (cid:396)efe(cid:396) to the pa(cid:396)ts of self-knowledge that are derived from social relationships. If self-knowledge is at least partly a product of construal processes, several questions arise about the accuracy of self-knowledge: Most of us assume that the best person to ask would be himself/herself. Yet we are also quick to recognize that people can sometimes possess a startling lack of self-insight. In fact, the reliability of introspection as a measure of assessment has been under debate for decades. Sometimes we lack self-insight because of strong motives.
