PSYB10H3 Chapter 2: Methods of Social Psych
Document Summary
Chapter 2 - the methods of social psychology. Social psychology research illuminates even ordinary aspects of human behavior and it"s causes. Hindsight bias - people"s tendency to be overconfident about whether they could have predicted a given outcome. Researchers look at evidence found in archives such as census reports, police records, sports statistics, newspaper articles, and databases containing historic and ethnographic descriptions of people in different cultures. Surveys can be conducted in interviews or written questionnaires. Random sampling - more likely to be representative of a whole population. Convenience sampling - easier to find but might be biased. Correlational research - research that does not involve random assignment to different situations, conditions, and that psychologists conduct to determine whether there is a relationship between the variables. Correlations are important and helpful in alerting investigations and initiate possible hypotheses about aspects of the world however, a third variable could influence both.
