Value-expressive function- express are most cherished values; enables people to maintain valued beliefs of inequality: reference groups- groups whose opinions matter and affect the individual. Knowledge-function- help organize our understanding of the world. Elaboration likelihood model (heuristics- systematic model: central (systematic) route people think deliberately on the content of message; personal message; knowledge about the issue, peripheral (heuristic) route- to simple superficial cues; Source characteristics- the attractiveness, credibility of the speaker: sleeper effect- little influence at the beginning, but later cause a shift of attitude. Message characteristics: message quality- higher quality, more, vividness- personal narrative w/ persuasive emotional appeal is more persuasive. Identifiable victim effect- tendency to be more moved with single vivid individual than abstract # of individuals.
