PSYB30H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Electrodermal Activity, Sympathetic Nervous System, Autonomic Nervous System
Document Summary
Physiological characteristics functioning of organ systems within the body. Advantage physiological characteristics can be measured mechanically and reliably. Physiological systems nervous system, cardiac system, musculoskeletal system. Simplicity/parsimony these theories explain a lot of behaviour with a few constructs. Focus on measures of distinct physiological systems, e. g. heart rate or brain waves, because they are wondering if some people will have more/less physiological response than others under certain conditions. Have to build a theoretical bridge between personality dimension of interest and physiological variables to use physiological concepts to help explain personality. Most common measures are obtained from electrodes which are sensors placed on surface of skin, non-invasive; drawback is that they are wired to a machine so can"t really move. New electrodes will use telemetry process by which electrical signals are sent from participant to polygraph through radio waves instead of wires; will get rid of movement issue.
