Cultural variations within-group similarities and between-group differences can be physical, psychological, behavioral, or attitudinal. Cultural personality psych has 3 goals: discover principles underlying the cultural diversity, discover how human psych shapes culture, discover how cultural understandings shape our psych. 2 ingredients necessary to explain cultural variations: universal underlying mechanism e. g. callus-producing mechanisms, environmental differences in degree to which underlying mechanism is activated. Early experience and evoked mating strategies: poor child-rearing practices foster impulsivity and mating strategy of early reproduction. Cultural differences in conformity: prevalence of disease-causing pathogens causes cultural pressure to conform if you deviate from the group norms, you might encounter a pathogen. Transmitted culture ideas, values, attitudes, and beliefs that exist originally in at least 1 person"s mind and are transmitted to other minds via interaction with people. E. g. view that it is wrong to eat beef is transmitted from 1 person to another.
