PSYB30H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: George Bonanno, Ego Psychology, Unconscious Mind
Document Summary
Chapter 7 motives and goals: what do we want to do in life. Psychoanalysis had four basic propositions: determinism, drive, conflict and the unconscious. Forces which we have little control over determine all human behaviour and experience. Powerful forces can be traced back to primitive drives or instincts. We want sexual satisfaction and suitable outlets for our aggression. The forces that determine our behaviour and experience are in perpetual conflict with one another, which causes us anxiety. We do not even know what those forces that determine our behaviour and those conflicts that precipitate our anxiety are they are unconscious to us. Two sets of instincts or drives: 1) sexuality and all other life insticts aka eros and 2) aggression and all other death instincts aka. Unconscious memories are consciously remembered through debilitating symptoms such as anxiety or dread. Conscious experience is the tip of the iceberg. Jean martin charcot used hypnotism to gain access to the unconscious mind.
