* anxiety disorders are most common psychological disorder! Anxiety: unpleasant feeling of fear and apprehension accompanied by increased physiological arousal (2) components: physiological: heightened level of arousal cognitive: subjective perception of arousal and worry tends to be future-focused: what could happen reinforced by avoidance test anxiety. Study: tendency to perceive threat in neutral situations predicts elevated anxiety. Anxiety disorders: disorders in which fear or tension is overriding and the primary disturbance (list all the disorders) Many things in common but some key distinguishing features. More common in women than men across all ages. Highest life morbid risk (lmr): major depressive episode. Separation anxiety: disorder in which child feels intense fear and distress when away from someone on whom he or she is very dependent. Seen as a child disorder but adult form gaining focus. Phobia: intense fear and avoidance of specific objects and situations, recognized as irrational by individual. Out of proportion to the danger actually posed.
