Mood disorders involve disturbances in emotion, form the sadness of depression to the elation and irritability of mania. Often associated with panic attacks, substance abuse, sexual dysfunction and personality disorder. Formal diagnostic listing of mood disorders: 2 major types of mood disorder listed in dsm-5: major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder, diagnosis of depression. Dsm 5 called for at least 5 symptoms for at least two weeks in order to be diagnosed with major depressive disorder (mdd) Symptoms (still apply): sad mood, lost of interest, insomnia, shift in activity level, weight loss/gain, loss of energy, negative self concept, complaints about concentrations, recurrent thoughts of death or suicide. Study with twins showed that even with less than 5 symptoms and a duration of less then 2 weeks. Other research suggests that depression exists on a continuum of severity.
