Document Summary
Personality disorder: a heterogeneous group of disorders that are regarded as long-standing, pervasive, and inflexible patterns of behavior and inner experience that deviate from the expectations of a person"s culture and that impair social and occupational functioning. Three key criteria to distinguish normal vs. disordered personality. Disordered personality is indicated by rigid and inflexible behavior, and the afflicted person has difficulty altering his or her behavior according to changes in the situations. The person engages in self-defeating behavior that fosters vicious cycles. Structural instability refers to a fragility to the self that cracks under conditions of stress. Livesley identified 3 types of life tasks and proposed that failure with any one is enough to warrant a personality disorder diagnosis. Forming stable, integrative representations of self and others. Developing capacity for intimacy and relations with others. To function adaptively in society by engaging in cooperative behavior.
