Suffers intense distress and social or occupational impairment. Defence against the anxiety produced by repressed id impulses. Repression stems from a particular interpersonal problems of childhood. Persistent, irrational fears linked generally to the presence of other people. Avoid situations where they might be evaluated, fear of revealing anxiousness + embarrassment. Panic disorder (cued or uncued) (varies cross culturally) Suffers sudden and often inexplicable attack of symptoms. Chronic, uncontrollable worry about all manners of things. Disorders (80% of other anxiety disorders have panic attacks) Environment, not being able to control, unpredictable = anxiety, worry. Worry is a distraction from other distressing images. Unconscious conflict between ego and id (unconscious conflict, thus anxiety without reason) Relaxation training, cognitive restructuring, exposure to internal cues. Help clients confront the true sources of their conflict. Reformulate anxiety to one or more phobias/cued anxieties and treat. Helplessness = modelling, operant shaping, verbal instructions. Fears of contamination, expressing sexual/aggressive impulse, bodily dysfunction.
