PSYB32H3 Chapter 9: Chapter 9
Document Summary
Information processing theory human mind is like a computer, processing information from the environment through perception and attention (input), encoding it in memory (storage and retrieval), and applying information to the solution of problems (software) Human mind is flexible but two main limitations: amount of information it can process at a time, how fast it can process information. Multi-store model: information is depicted as moving through a series of processing units, in each of which it may be stored, either fleetingly or permanently. Sensory register: receives information from the environment and stores it fleetingly. The information is stored in its original form. Usually 15 to 30 seconds: ability to use activities like rehearsal improves with age. Connectionist models: describe mental processes in terms of the interconnections of the neural network. Information is described as an elaborate set of neural connections and thinking involves processing information as it spreads throughout the network parallel distributed processing.
