ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY
CHAPTER 12 SUBSTANCE-RELATED DISORDERS
Substance Dependence: have to have 3 of the following
- Tolerance t either larger doses to get desired effect, or the effect of the drug becomes
less if keep taking usual amount
- Withdrawal symptoms t negative physical & psychological effects if stop taking drug,
take drug to relieve the withdrawal symptoms
- More or longer use
- Recognizes a lot of usage try to stop but cant
- A lot of time spent to get the drug or recover from its effect
- Still use it even if it has bad psychological or psychical effects
- Person cuts back from work or socializing b/c of the use of the drug
Substance Abuse: 1 of the following
- Failure to fulfill major obligations- work
- Exposure to physical dangers t drink & drive
- Legal problems t drink & drive
- Persistent social or interpersonal problems

ALCOHOL ABUSE & DEPENDENCE
- Alcohol dependence may include tolerance or withdrawal, sever forms of it

PREVELANCE OF ALCOHOL & COMORBIDITY WITH OTHER DISORDERS
- 20% of men and 8% of women fit criteria of alcohol dependence, the prevelance dips

SHORT-TERM EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL
- Alcohol is metabolized by enzymes after being swallowed and reaching the stomach, but
excess quantities stay in blood stream
- The initial effects are stimulating, but after blood-alcohol level peaks and starts to
decline it leads to negative emotions Æ biphasic effect
- Alcohol increases serotonin and dopamine levels, and it stimulates GABA receptors that
reduce tension
LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF PROLONGED ALCOHOL ABUSE
- Has biological and psychological deterioration, memory gaps screwed up livers
- Alcohol has empty calories feel full with no nourishment
- Fetal alcohol syndrome t growth of fetus is slowed and cranial facial and limb
abnormalities are produced during pregnancy
INHALANT USE DISORDERS
- Not just in small kids a lot of young people begin their substance abuse with glue, spray
paint, gasoline etc
- They sniff it hug it bag it
NICOTINE & CIGARETTE SMOKING
- Nicotine t Is the addicting agent of tobacco
- It stimulates nicotine receptors stimulating the dopamine neurons that produce
reinforcing effects of most drugs
PREVALENCE & HEALTH CONSEQUENCES OF SMOKING
- 50,000 AND 500,000 deaths a year in Canada and the United States
- 21% Canadians 15+ smokers (more men)
- More than half of natives smoke
- Smoking rates keep increasing
- Socio-economic cost of smoking is high (80 million lost days of work and health care cost
$65 billion dollars in America)

- Second hand smoke t smoke coming from the burning end of a cigarette

- Increases chance of lung cancer 25%

- Marijuana t consists of dried and crushed leaves and flowering tops of hemp plant
- Hashish t stronger than weed, done by removing and drying the resin exudates of the
tops of high quality cannabis plant
EFFECTS OF MARIJUANA
PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS
- feel relaxed and sociable, time moves more slow
- large doses rapid shifts in emotion and hallucination higher the dose
- effects may take up to half and hour to kick in, prompting
- it impairs psychomotor skills
SOMATIC EFFECTS
- Blood shot itchy eyes, dry mouth and throat, increased appetite
- Impairs lung functioning and higher risk of respitaroy diroders
- Coughing wheezing injury to air way in lung functioning
- Marajiuana smoke last in lung longer and more inhaled
- 1 weed joint = to 4 tabbaco cigs in tar, 5 in CO, 10in damage to airways
- Hard to know if addective, b/c has reverse tolerance, w/ experience realize need less to
get effect
THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS
- Can reduce nausea and increase appetite in chemotherapy
- Treatment for discomfort in aids, MS, epilepsy

SEDATIVES
Sedatives t slow the activities of the body and reduce responsiveness
OPIATES
Opiates t group of addictive sedatives that relieve pain and induce sleep when taken in
moderate doses
Opium t type of opiate, dried mmilky juice optained from immature fruit of opium poppy,
produces pain and reduces drownieness
