PSYB32H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Insomnia, Pain Management, Thalamus
Document Summary
Many individuals obtain opioids by drinking over the counter cough syrups that contain the opioid drug dextromethorphan. Two main types of opioid compounds: natural and synthetic. Natural opioids are found in opium exudant from poppy plants. Morphine = schedule ii and codeine = schedule iii or iv. The primary naturally occurring opioids found in opium are morphine and codeine. Thebaine is another component of opium but is a relatively minor component. Semisynthetic opioids are synthesized from morphine or codeine: semisynthetic opioids include heroine, buprenorphine, hydrocodone, oxycontin, percoset = combination of oxycontin and tylenol, vicodin = combination of hydrocodone and acetaminophen. Fully synthetic opioids are not derived from morphine, codeine, or any other naturally occurring opioids: duragesic, dolophine, laam. Producers syntheize heroin from morphine through a process that begins with extracting morphine from opium and then applying industrial chemical agents to synthesize heroin. Opium has been used since prehistoric times.
