CHAPTER 7 GETTING A NEW BEHAVIOUR TO OCCUR WITH SHAPING
Shaping
Shaping can be used to establish a behav that the person never performs
Shaping (aka: method of successive approximation): dev. of new operant behav by the
reinforcement of successive approximations (of a behav) and the extinction of earlier
approximations of that behaviour until the new behaviour occurs.
Shaping involves specifying the final target behaviour, identify a response that could be
used as a starting point in working toward the final target, and reinforcing the starting
behaviour then reinforce closer and closer approximations until eventually the final target
behaviour occurs
!
Factors Influencing the Effectiveness of Shaping
Specifying the Final Target Behaviour
oPrecise statement of the final target behaviour increases the chances for consistent
reinforcement of successive approximations of that behaviour
oThe final target behaviour should be stated in such a way that all of the relevant
characteristics of the behaviour (topography, duration, frequency, latency, and
intensity) are identified
Choosing the Starting Behaviour
oBehav that occurs often enough to be reinforced within the session time, and it
should approximate the target behaviour
Choosing the Shaping Steps
The Pace of Movement through the Shaping Steps
oA) Reinforce an approximation at least several times before proceeding to the
next step. In other words, avoid underreinforcement of a shaping step. Trying to
go to a new step before the previous approximation has been well established can
