Document Summary
Chapter 26: helping an individual to develop self-control: self-control programs/self-management/self-modifications: used to change or control o(cid:374)e"s o(cid:449)(cid:374) (cid:271)eha(cid:448)ior. Causes of self-control problems: behavioral excesses: too much of something, provide immediate reinforcement. Immediate small punishers win over cumulatively signigicant reinforcement (working out) Immediate small punisher (if behavior occurs) wins over immediate but improbable major punisher (if behavior does not occur: example: helmet is ugly vs no helmet (might fall one day and get injured = improbable) Immediate small punisher (if behavior does not occur) wins over delayed major punisher (if behavior does not occur: by avoiding a weak aversive stimulus now, one eventually receives a strong aversive consequence later. Example: avoiding dentist now (avoiding small punisher) wins over major dental pain later. Dentist apt now = needle and small pain; whole the delayed consequences= major problems can be extremely aversive, they occur long after many missed preventative opportunities of pain/needle.
