Two types of behavioral assessment: direct assessment: person observes and records target behavior as it occurs, indirect assessment: involves using interviews, questionnaires and rating scales to obtain info on target behavior from person exhibiting behavior or from others. People providing info may not have been trained to observe target behavior and may not have noticed all occurrences of behavior. Indirect assessment may be based on incomplete info about target behavior therefore most research and application in behavior mod relies on direct assessment. Steps needed to develop behavior recording plan: 1. Labels for behaviors are ambiguous can mean different things to different people. Interobserver reliability: when two people can observe same behavior and both record that behavior occurred. When and where to record: next step is to identify who will observe and record behavior, observer must have proximity to client to observe target behavior when it occurs. Self monitoring: client observes and records own target behavior.
