Response generalization: training leads to the development of new behavior that has not been specifically trained. Behavior maintenance: the trained behavior persists in the target situation(s) over time. Programming for generality of operant behavior change includes strategies of programming for stimulus generalization, response generalization, and behavior maintenance. The more similar the training and target situations are, the more stimulus generalization there will be between them. There are four main strategies for programming operant stimulus generalization. When this occurs, the individual is said to be using a self-mediated physical or verbal stimulus.
