Document Summary

Chapter 2 the first steps in vision: from light to neural signals. Two ways to conceptualize light; as a wave or as a stream of photons. Wave: oscillation that travels through a medium by transferring energy from one particle or point to another without causing any displacement of the medium. Photon: a quantum of light that exhibits both particle and wave properties. Treat light as being made up of waves when it moves around the world. Treat light as being made up of photons when it is absorbed. Absorb: to take something such as light, noise or energy and not transmit it at all. Scatter/ diffracted: to disperse something such as light, in an irregular fashion. When light strikes a light colored surface, much of the light is reflected. Reflected: to redirect something that strikes a surface eg) (light/sound/heat), usually back towards its point of origin. Most of the light striking a dark surface is absorbed.
