Document Summary

After viewing a motion in a constant direction for a sustained period of time (at least 15 seconds) we see any stationary objects that we view subsequently as moving in the opposite direction. Eg. the water fall illusion: looking at a water fall and then immediately looking at the rocks around it. The rocks would look like hey are flowing in an upward direction. Werner reichardt: created a bug motion detector model to explain how flies detect motion (read page 239 for details) A more realistic version of the model would include receptors to detect longer range motion (239 will have the details) One objection to the neural circuit above is that it doesn"t require continuous motion to fire. Apparent motion: the illusory impression of smooth motion resulting from the rapid alternation of objects that appear in different locations in rapid successions.
