Document Summary

Cognitive psychology sees humans not as passive receivers and transformers of signal information, but as active selectors of information from the environment. Bits: the amount of information provided by a given event can be quantified in terms of bits, or binary digits. The three experiments varied stimulus uncertainty by using different number of stimuli; different stimulus frequencies; different stimulus sequences. A theory based on the idea that information processing is restricted by channel capacity. Based on the idea of channel capacity: the maximum amount of information that can be transmitted by an information-processing device. Preceding the filter is a capacity-free sensory buffer or temporary store. When two or more signals or messages occur at one time, they enter the sensory buffer together. Input channels convey information to the senses, e. g. the eyes, the ears; this information then travels to the short-term memory store: from there, it reaches the filter, which selects information on the basis of physical characteristics only.
