Primary memory (william james, 1890) thought to be the area where information is initially stored so that it is available for consciousness, attention and general use (stm) Thought to be the long-term storage area for memories (ltm) Modal model of memory (atkinson & shiffrin, 1968) a memory model consisting of sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Capable of registering a large quantity of information, however most of the information fades unless it is given attention. Participants flashed a matrix of 9 letters, in rows of 3, for a brief moment, 50ms. Partial report task participants required to immediately recall only 1 row of letters. Whole report task participants required to recall all. Decay the term used to refer to the time course of forgetting. Short-term memory receives information from both sensory memory and long-term memory.
