PSYB57H3 Chapter 1-3: sense lecture 1-3
Document Summary
Our brain is designed for our reality. We change everything so we can"t step into the save river twice. Adaptation: a reduction in response caused by prior or continuing stimulation. Sensory transducer- a receptor that converts phsyical energy from the environment into neural activity. Monism - opposite of dualism the idea that mind and matter are formed from, or reducible to, a single ultimate. Materialism - one form of monism - the idea that phyiscal matter is the only reality, and everything including the mind can be explained in terms of matter and phsyical phenomena. Fechner- not a good philosopher invented psychophysics. Panpsychism- the idea that all matter has consciousness (fenchner) Psychophysics- the science of defining quantitative relationships between phsyical and psychological (subjective) events. Very important, personality tests still use it. Weber was interested in the smallest difference/ change in a stimulus that can be detected. How small of the differences are before we notice it.
