Document Summary

James"s description of attention: at the turn of the twentieth century, william james was the leading psychologist in north. America; his great textbook principles of psychology (1890/1983) contains a chapter on attention that many psychologists still cite: here is one of james"s most famous passages on the subject: It is the taking possession by the mind, in clear a vivid form, of one out of what seem several simultaneously possible objects or trains of thought. Focalization, concentration, of consciousness are of its essence. Selective attention: early research on attention was driven by practical problems experienced by armed forces personnel, one of the problems arose "in communication centers, where many different streams of speech reached the person at the same time" (broadbent). In other words, they were good at selective attention - able to select the information that was relevant to their task and ignore the information that was not.
