Valence: a generally positive or negative quality. One possible advantage of emotions is their contribution to general arousal: when the brain perceives a situation requiring action, emotions provide the arousal needed to trigger a response. For simple tasks: greater arousal leads to better result of outrunning a predator. For more complex tasks: too much arousal leads to bad performance. Emotions form a bridge to past memories that can be used to decide how to respond to a stimulus like a snake. Nonverbal communication: consist of facial expression and body language, provide important source of social information; body expressions of fear communicate important information in an immediate arousing: help us to communicate. Humans pay the most attention to the face (altho the whole body is used: movement of human face is controlled by 2 cranial nerves. The facial nerve (vii): control the superficial muscles attached to the skin, which are primarily responsible for facial expressions.
