Document Summary

10. 1: sound waves - stimulus for audition i. Sound waves are created by the undulating energy created by the displacement of molecules, which causes compression waves of changing air pressure to spread from a tuning fork: physical properties of sound waves. Frequency (pitch perception) is rate at which the sound waves vibrate and is measured in cycles per second or hz. Amplitude (loudness perception) is intensity of sound and is measured in db. Complexity (timbre) distinguishes between pure tone and mixture of frequencies. Sound waves travel @ speed of 1100 feet / second, and 4x faster in water. Frequency is the number of cycles a wave completes in a given amount of time. Frequency of sound waves are measured in hertz (hz). Frequency is related to pitch perception (ex: low pitch = fewer frequencies). Humans can perceive sounds between 20 and 20,000 hz.
