PSYB65H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Tectorial Membrane, Oval Window, Basilar Membrane
Document Summary
Sounds are brain constructed, no brain= no sound. A cycle is one complete peak and valley on a graph- max to min and back to max. Sound wave has 3 physical attibutes; frequency, amplitude, and complexity produce by the displace of air molecules. Sound waves travel about 1100 feet in air: slower in water, sound energy varies in wavelength. Frequency is the # of cycle a wave completes in a give amount of time: measured in cycles per second- hertz (hz) Low pitched sound have fewer wave frequencies- fewer cycle per sec. Very low frequency sound waves travel long distances in water. High frequency sound waves echo and form the basis of sonar. Amplitude (strength), which causes differences in perceived intensity or loudness. Sound wave amplitude are measured in decibels (db: speech sound- 40 db, more than 70 db we perceive as loud; less than 20 db perceive as soft or quiet.
