Document Summary

Prefrontal asymmetry has been connected to distinctions b/w episodic and semantic memory ad b/w processes of encoding and retrieval. Tulving suggested that: left prefrontal structures are specialized for retrieval of general knowledge (semantic memory) and for encoding novel aspects of incoming information into episodic memory (specific unique events) right prefrontal structures are specialized for episodic memory retrieval. Frontal activation takes place during selective attention activities. Prefrontal cortex mediates the capacity to make and control shift in attention. Divided attention is associated with the prefrontal cortex: patients with frontal lesions frequently have difficulty when divided attention is required, such as performing two tasks at once. Prospective memory remember to remember : deficits in prospective memory is an aspect of frontal amnesia involving time awareness and monitoring. Patients may recall an event or a person but be unable to situate the memory in its appropriate context for time and place. Confabulation: fabrication of false and often improbable information to compensate for amnesia.
