Document Summary

Chapter 7: somatic symptom disorders and dissociative disorders. Case study: in le roy, teenagers started having uncontrollable tics, twitching and jerking. It was diagnosed as conversion disorder but most parents were against the diagnosis saying their kids never had any traumatic experience that could of led to that. In the dsm, a somatoform disorder was ruled out if it could not be determined that there was no medical explanation, but in the dsm-5 this requirement has been taken out. Somatoform disorder has been changed to somatic symptom disorder. In somatic symptom and related disorders, individual complains of bodily symptoms that suggest a physical defect or dysfunction but no physiological basis can be found. A study found 9. 5% of students had a somatic syndrome and that 25% has anxiety. Predictors of somatic syndromes included depression and impairment in daily activities. Dissociative disorders: disorders in which the normal integration of consciousness, memory, or identity is suddenly and temporarily altered.
