Social identity theory describes the dynamics of group behavior and intergroup relations. Self categorization theory (sct) encompasses both (tajfel and turner"s) social identity theory of intergroup relations" and (turner"s) social identity theory of the group". Social identity theory (sit) = role of identity in intergroup conflict and harmony. Self categorization theory (sct) = the social cognitive architecture of social identity processes. Both sct & sit are underpinning for the explanation of stereotyping, collective action, group cohesion, leadership, group decision-making, social influence, deviance, motivation, and the self. (tajfel) after ww2 went on to understand prejudice, discrimination, and intergroup conflict. Accentuation principle when people categorize objects and other people they perceptually accentuate similarities within and differences between categories on dimensions they believe are correlated with the categorization. 1969, cognitive bias in stereotyping stating people categorize others as similar to a fellow group member and different from members of other groups.
