PSYC12H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Implicit Stereotype, In-Group Favoritism, Social Desirability Bias
Document Summary
Prejudice is the negative attitude toward a particular social group and its members. Divided into components: cognitive (similar to stereotype), affective (evaluative response) and behavioral (discriminate against or favor a group) A more precise definition of prejudice valenced affective or evaluative response (positive or negative) to a social category and its members. Stereotype is a category based generalization linking category members to typical attributes. Discrimination is behavior directed toward category members not because of a particular deservingness, but because they happen to be members of that category. As a consequence, in others people"s point of view, this act may not seem discriminatory while in the view of the target is that it will have a negative consequence. Back then, measures included asking for participants to do self reports about their attitudes. This didn"t work because they have the limitation of yielding accurate estimates of attitudes only if they are willing to report it.
