Manners differ across cultures bc people socialized to different sets of norms and customs. Western europe, and likewise other modernizing cultures transformed as manners of aristocracy trickled down to govern behaviour of lower classes as well. Blowing nose: a common topic in older manners" books. One"s technique seen to indicate one"s status. Formerly etiquette was only for upper classes, but it soon applied to all classes of people. Middle ages: do not spit into basin when you wash your hands but beside it / do not spit across table in manner of hunters . By 18th century: frequent spitting is disagreeable, when necessary you should conceal it as much as possible, and avoid soiling either persons or their clothes on matter who they are . By late 19th century: spitting far less tolerated, though still very common at all times a disgusting habit .
