PSYC14H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Collectivism, High-Context And Low-Context Cultures, Brussels Sprout
Document Summary
They argue that these different artistic styles reflect some fundamental differences in basic cognitive and perceptual processes that exist between the two cultures. A taxonomic categorization strategy is when stimuli are grouped according to the perceived similarity of their attributes. They are especially common among western people (dog/rabbit- both animals) A thematic categorization strategy in that the stimuli are grouped together on the basis of casual, temporal, or spatial relationships among them. This is especially common among east asians (rabbits/carrots=related) The difference in categorization strategies reflects an underlying difference in the ways that people attend to their worlds. Nisbett and colleagues refer to these ways as holistic and analytic thinking. Analytic thinking is characterized by a focus on objects and their attributes. Objects are perceived as existing independently from their contexts, and they are understood in terms of their component parts: analytic thinking is more common in western cultures than it is elsewhere, particularly in east.
