Document Summary

Acculturation is the process by which people migrate to and learn a culture that is different from their original (or heritage) culture. Despite its great importance, the literature on acculturation remains more diverse, more contradictory, less coherent, and less empirically grounded than any other topic in this book. Reaching consistent conclusions on acculturation is difficult for researchers because acculturating individuals have such widely varying experiences. Few commonalities occur for all acculturating individuals, which makes it challenging to identify common patterns. What happens when people move to a new culture. The longer immigrants spend in a new culture the more similar their emotional experiences become to those of other people living in that culture. A common pattern of adjustment to acculturation. In the first few months people have very positive feelings about the host culture (honeymoon phase), but over time this gives way to the negative feelings associated with culture shock.
