PSYC14H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 14: Cultural Universal, European Canadian, Ifalik
Document Summary
Liget is a key emotion in the life of the ilongot- an indigenous hunting and gathering tribe that lives in the northern philippines. One cannot really comprehend the customs of ilongot unless they understand liget, but understanding this is a challenge because it can"t be translated into english. Liget is roughly translated to a combination of english words anger, passion, energy . An anthropologist who lived with the ilongot provided a detailed account for liget- liget is experienced when one is insulted, disappointed, irritated but especially when one is envious of another. It can be aroused by all night songfests, pride of accomplishments, or the death of a loved one. Liget is seen as a wellspring of energy, which can either lead to extreme concentration of energy or chaos. It"s hard enough to imagine how someone else from our culture would feel, let alone someone from a culture as distant as the ilongot.
