Culture: a system of ideas and practices that are held in common in a particular society, or set of societies. Society: a group of people who live in a particular place at a particular time. Potential for emotion: asking whether people of different cultures, if put in an appropriate experimental situation, would be capable of showing certain universal emotional responses in terms of experience, expression, and physiology. Practice of emotions: what actually happens in people"s emotional lives: the day-to-day emotional experiences of people from different cultures do differ, often dramatically, e. g. , some cultures permit public expressions of anger while others suppress all such expressions. Self-construal: independent and interdependent selves: two kinds of self-construal that affect emotions: The self is fundamentally connected with other people. The imperative is to find one"s status, identity, and roles within the community and other collectives such as families and organizations. The emphasis is on the social context and the situational influences on behavior.
